Wallkill Refuge expansion plan public comments period extended until April 9, 2008.

In resonse to public requests, the US Fish and Wildlife Services has extended the public comment period on the Wallkill River National Wildlife Refuge Draft Comprehensive Conservation Plan and Environmental Assessment to Wednesday, April 9, 2008.

For those not already familiar with the WRNWR CCP you may read up on it here.  The FWS preferred plan is "B".  We couldn't agree more.  This plan essentially doubles the size of the refuge and adds black bear as a huntable species along with deer, turkey and migratory birds.  This does not mean that bear hunting will be allowed despite the current ban on bear hunting in New Jersey, rather, should bear hunting be re-instated the refuge will be open to it.

We strongly urge you to resond favor of Plan "B".
